Carmelcrest were appointed by NHS Blood and Transport to deliver a new blood donor centre in Brixton, South London. The project involved transforming a dilapidated retail unit on the busy high street into a modern, purpose-built clinical space for the local community.
The works were undertaken in a challenging setting: a heavily trafficked urban environment with limited access and logistics. The conversion required the introduction of specialist healthcare infrastructure into a building not originally designed for clinical use. Careful planning was essential to manage both the complexity of the fit out and the external environment.
Carmelcrest carried out a full refurbishment and fit out, including complete M&E installations, fabric upgrades, and a high-specification clinical interior. A new glazed entrance screen was installed to provide both accessibility and a welcoming frontage. Specialist healthcare equipment integrated into the design and installed in close collaboration with NHS teams. Programme management ensured minimal disruption to the surrounding community despite the busy high street location.
The project delivered a high-quality, fully operational blood donor centre that now provides a vital service to the local community. It demonstrates Carmelcrest’s ability to adapt challenging buildings into modern healthcare facilities, combining technical delivery with sensitivity to location and end-user needs.
