Modern Toilet Facilities for The Science Museum London

Overview
Carmelcrest delivered the refurbishment of visitor toilet facilities at theScience Museum in South Kensington, within the Group Entrance and West Hallareas. The works transformed the existing male and female toilet layouts intomodern, self-contained gender-neutral cubicles, with upgraded finishes,sanitaryware, doorsets, IPS panelling, wall cladding, mirrors, hand dryers andcleaner’s facilities.

Challenges
The project was carried out in a live, public-facing museum environment onExhibition Road, one of South Kensington’s busiest cultural locations. The keychallenge was working around high visitor footfall, operational museumrequirements, existing services, structural constraints and restricted access,while maintaining safe public routes, fire escape routes and a positive visitorexperience. All deliveries had to be arranged before 9am each morning.

OurApproach
Carmelcrest coordinated closely with the project team to adapt the designaround site conditions and client comments. The works required careful settingout, flexible sequencing, protection of live areas and detailed coordination offinishes, services and structural requirements. Durable materials such asFormica IPS, Hi-Macs cladding, Mosa floor tiles and solid doorsets wereincorporated to suit a high-use public environment.

Outcomes
The completed refurbishment has created a more welcoming, inclusive anduser-friendly set of toilet facilities for museum visitors. Improved layoutsand circulation make the spaces easier to navigate, while enhanced accessibleand ambulant provisions ensure a better experience for a wider range of users.Upgraded finishes have refreshed the overall environment, and dedicatedcleaner’s and storage facilities support more efficient day-to-day operations.Delivered within the constraints of a busy, fully operational museum, theproject successfully modernised a key visitor amenity while minimisingdisruption to the visitor experience.
