The Holyrood Street Kiosk project demonstrates Carmelcrest’s ability to collaborate with clients and design teams to deliver innovative, sustainable, and community-focused construction. The scheme created a new kiosk in central London, designed as both an events venue and a vibrant community space.
The project was driven by a strong ethos of repurposing and sustainability. Storage containers were adapted to form the main building structure, clad in sustainable timber and enhanced with climbing plants. Inspection chamber rings were repurposed as canopy supports, while a tensile wire frame system provided a striking canopy covered with planting. A green roof was introduced, and climbing plants were trained to grow up to 10 metres, creating a living façade that softened the urban setting.
The innovative nature of the scheme required close collaboration with the client and specialist consultants. Technical challenges around structural adaptation, planting systems, and integration of sustainable materials were addressed through proactive engagement and problem-solving across the project team.
The kiosk was successfully delivered as a distinctive and functional community facility, celebrated for its innovation and environmental credentials.
The project received a Civic Trust Award, recognising its contribution to community engagement and social value.
