The University of Hertfordshire appointed Carmelcrest through their Approved Suppliers Framework to undertake a roof replacement on the Film, Media and Music Building. Recognising the opportunity to combine essential maintenance with sustainability improvements, the University integrated a decarbonisation strategy into the project brief.
The roof coverings were replaced and upgraded with specialist insulation to achieve improved U-values, enhancing the building’s thermal performance and reducing energy demand. In addition, solar panels were integrated generating on-site renewable energy. Rooftop air handling plant was modified and upgraded to modern, energy-efficient systems. Together, these measures contributed directly to the University’s carbon reduction targets and long-term sustainability strategy.
The project was delivered within a live building at the heart of the Universities main campus. This required careful phasing and coordination to ensure safety and minimise disruption to students and staff. Works were scheduled to avoid peak operational hours, with strict site management controls in place throughout.
The scheme delivered a modernised and decarbonised roof structure, significantly improving energy efficiency while extending the life of the building. The project demonstrates Carmelcrest’s ability to deliver essential refurbishment works with integrated sustainability outcomes in live higher-education environments.
