Carmelcrest were appointed by Lee Valley Regional Park Authority to demolish an existing bird hide and deliver a new state-of-the-art facility. The project stands as a testament to innovative design, sustainability, and skilled workmanship, creating a building that enhances the visitor experience while blending seamlessly into its natural surroundings.
Located within a sensitive nature reserve, the works carried a risk of disturbing local wildlife. To mitigate this, Carmelcrest implemented low-impact measures including camouflaged equipment and strict noise control. The riverbank location also made traditional foundation methods unsuitable, requiring the adoption of a bespoke helical pile system to provide stability without damaging the environment.
The timber-frame structure was pre-fabricated and assembled on site by our skilled carpenters. An Eco-Green roof system was designed and installed, doubling as a habitat for birds while improving insulation. All timber was FSC-certified and sourced locally to support sustainable forestry practices.
Energy-efficient Air Source Heat Pumps were integrated into the design, helping the facility achieve a strong BREEAM rating and move towards carbon-neutral operation. In addition, a building management system was installed to monitor energy consumption and support long-term performance.
The new Bird Hide provides a sustainable, durable, and low-maintenance facility that respects its natural setting while delivering a modern amenity for visitors.
