Carmelcrest were appointed by Hockerill Anglo-European College to deliver extensive refurbishment works, creating a modern Sixth Form area alongside improvements to existing facilities. The project combined new build elements with complex remodelling of occupied areas, requiring careful planning and stakeholder collaboration.
The scheme included construction of a mezzanine floor, replacement of curtain walling, new windows and external doors, flat roof replacement, toilet block remodelling, and waste drainage upgrades. Internally, Carmelcrest completed a full refurbishment and reconfiguration of existing spaces.
In addition, Carmelcrest undertook the full M&E design, including ventilation, plumbing, heating, and electrical systems. Installations comprised new pipework, passenger lift, MVACs, switchboards, and fire and intruder alarm systems, ensuring the facilities met modern safety and performance standards.
The school remained occupied throughout, with both staff and students living on site. To minimise disruption, noisy works were scheduled during holidays or out-of-hours. All operatives were enhanced DBS-checked, and site operations were overseen by an SMSTS-accredited Site Manager.
“I would like to make special mention of Earl (Carmelcrest Site Manager) whose management of the site and issues has been impeccable and I can honestly say he has been the best site manager I’ve ever worked with.”
- Mr Gregg Pettit, Estates Manager
