Overview

The University of Hertfordshire appointed Carmelcrest to deliver a complex refurbishment of the Mercer Building, creating a new home for the University’s Architectural Department. The building also accommodates the University’s Estates Team, who remained in occupation throughout the works, requiring careful planning and close collaboration to minimise disruption.

Scope of Works

The project involved a full refurbishment, including M&E upgrades, interior fit out, new finishes, acoustic baffles and installation of bespoke furniture. Specialist design considerations were incorporated to create modern teaching and working environments tailored to the needs of architectural students and staff.

Sustainability & Decarbonisation

This scheme represented the University of Hertfordshire’s first full building decarbonisation project. As part of the works, Carmelcrest replaced existing heating and ventilation plant and equipment with new energy-efficient systems, significantly reducing the building’s carbon footprint and supporting the University’s long-term sustainability strategy.

Challenges & Approach

The occupied nature of the building required phased working, strict segregation, and clear communication with building users to ensure safety and continuity of operations. By engaging closely with stakeholders and maintaining flexible programming, disruption was minimised while high-quality outcomes were achieved.

Outcomes

The refurbished Mercer Building now provides a state-of-the-art environment for architectural education, alongside modernised estates team facilities, all within a decarbonised and future-proofed building.
